Your Building Site
Selecting a building
site that fits your lifestyle and budget is possibly
the most critical step in the new home building process.
Your choice in land will shape the home in surprising
ways, depending on whether you choose a narrow lot in
a suburban development or a wooded or open piece of
property or a lake front property with spectacular views,
or anything in between.
Before you purchase
a promising building site (or if you already have the
site, before you choose a home design), spend some time
there. Think about ways the land will influence the
final design of your new home. Walk the property at
different times of the day. Ask yourself questions
 |
- What are the general characteristics
of the land? Is it green and woodsy? Rocky and gray
with a view of hills or mountains or is it a vast
open stretch?
- Can other structures be clearly
seen from the lot? What is their architectural style?
Will your style fit in this neighborhood?
- Should the house face toward
or away from the road? Where should the driveway
be located?
- Where does the sun rise and
set? Would you like to capture a specific view from
the living area or any other area of the home?
- How important is it for the
house to face south to save on heating costs?
- Is the site flat? Is the
lot narrow? Is there a hillside or stream to take
into consideration? Are there any other geological
conditions that might affect the design, placement
and or cost of your home?
- As you work with your real
estate agent, don’t hesitate to invite your
B&T Construction Builder to the site before you
decide to buy. They are experienced at knowing what
is a challenge and what only appears to be a challenge,
and finding creative solutions for difficult building
parcels.
- If you have already have
your building site selected, your B&T Builder
can analyze your real estate lot for you– helping
to adapt your home design to your site to minimize
dramatic topographical changes and keep your budget
in line.
